You lie, let’s meet

South Africans wary, the French tried online dating the most, and perhaps the saddest stat in this story: among the online-happy Americans, 82 percent think people lie in their profiles.

So South Africans, it seems, object to and avoid lying more than Americans do. And the French are creative with definitions: As a French friend said about lying about her age, with an adorable shrug, “eez coquette.”

So then why do we literal-minded Yanks keep complaining about liars; shouldn’t we be accepting it as part of Internet dating?

Well, I am a little bit more accepting. Folks are trying to put their best foot forward so, like in hiring, (and the analogies between dating and getting a job are many) folks gild the lily. Old photos, lies to height, weight, employment are common. I had one who lied about her name and was using the name of her cat. Now these will get found out sooner rather than later and the liar’s hope is that you will be so impressed with the real person that you will over look the inaccurate pics description etc.

I will over look the old pic, and height and weight minimizations. I am less willing to do it with employment or lack thereof as in the end that is more important to me.

Bottom line, I wish folks did not lie, but it is expected because we are trying to put our best foot forward. How much you tolerate is up to you but its not getting anymore honest out there.

Full disclosure, there are certainly things I do not want to tell a prospective lover on the first date (like the fact that I do not have a car) but I am not going to lie about it and will certainly answer that question honestly if posed. That said , I too want to build up some points before the negative stuff comes out.
