Is this some sort of post-9/11 thing? I know, I know, everything is, now. But in the early 90s, when the word was that a 30 woman had a better chance being caught in a terrorist event than landing a life partner, it was less intense than under today’s statistics, in which romantic success is less a matter of beating the odds than of your time running out. Does a uniformed partner mean it’s better to hook up with someone who knows CPR and all of the local evacuation routes, or who might call you at work just to say they love you, and to remind you that today we’re at Level Orange?

After 9/11, everyone told me “now you want to date a fireman or soldier, all women want big warrior men to take care of them” and I was like, No, I don’t, in fact I wish men would disappear for a while and let women run things, because women would not have come up with 9/11! Or the War in Iraq! There I said it. I’m an essentialist; so sue me.

Loving a man in uniform always seemed like more a gay-guy thing to me….

Actually, Kenneth, that “better chance of being killed by terrorist than getting married” study was from the early 80s, not 90s. Since discredited, but man did it stick in people’s heads!

“all women want big warrior men to take care of them” So they’ve got to defend foreign policy AND their girlfriend? Whew!
